My next outing activating will hopefully be this coming weekend and on Sunday I hope to activate Piel Castle on Piel Island although I will activate if possible from either Rampside or Roa Island which I believe is within the qualifying distance for CASHOTA. I will also hopefully activate Gleaston Castle in the afternoon. Piel Castle was originally a dwelling-house, which the Abbot of Furness fortified during the Anarchy, in the reign of King Stephen. In the early 14th century, Abbot John Cockerham founded the stone castle, when he was granted a licence to crenellate. The fortress stands on a low mound of boulder clay, at the southern end of Piel Island and consists of a massive keep, encased by inner and outer walled and ditched baileys. Guarding the deep-water harbour of Barrow-in-Furness, the Castell and Pele was dismantled 1403, partly rebuilt in 1429 but in 1537 it was recorded as being, now sore decayed. The southern and eastern parts of the keep, the curtain walls and flanking towers, are sadly being eroded by the sea. In 1487, Lambert Simnel and over 2,000 of his followers landed on the Island, at the start of their abortive attempt to seize the crown, from King Henry VII. I hope to be QRV at 0930 hrs on 20M SSB. Piel Castle Activation
Again this morning saw me getting up at at 0600 hours and after sorting out the puppy got some breakfast and packed the car with te days equipment. Looking outside the sky was overcast and looked grey and a downpour imminent but this was not to be. All loaded and leaving the drive at approximately 0710 hours heading out of Blackpool and M6 north bound.
Not long on M6 and I was soon turning off at the junction signposted Ulverston/Barrow etc. Once in Ulverston I then turned left off the main road and followed the coastal road to Rampside and then onto Roa Island. Right at the end of the road just after the cafe and before the lifeboat station I managed to get the car parked easily. There is room for many cars here while leaving space for the lifeboat crews on call-out when required.
Set-up on 20M SSB and was straight into an Italian station.
