Wx dependant and gaining a CASHOTA reference number from the management I hope to activate Ravenglass Roman fort & baths on Monday, 30th June 2014. This activation will be my third activation of Roman locations in the Northwest. The remains of the bath house of Ravenglass Roman fort, established in AD 130, are among the tallest Roman structures surviving in northern Britain: the walls stand almost 4 metres (13 feet) high. The fort at Ravenglass (whose earthworks can be seen near the bath house) guarded what was probably a useful harbour and there is evidence that soldiers stationed here served in Hadrian's fleet. The Roman fort at Ravenglass possibly represents the southern extremity of the 'Western Sea Defences', a line of forts and watch-towers strung along the north-western coastline of Cumbria; a western extension of Hadrian's Wall. The Roman name is Celtic in origin, being formed from the words glan/glenn 'bank, shore or landing' and venta 'market, trading-station'; another translation might be 'the Trading Port'. Although the name implies the existence of a small settlement at least, no evidence has been found in corroboration. Cashota Ref: G-543 WAB: SD09 Loc: IO84HI I would hope to be QRV at approximately 1000 hrs +/- 1/2 hour on 40M SSB. Hope to work forum members. 73's Ian 2E0EDX

Monday, 30th June 2014 saw me again heading back up the MG motorway, to activate my third ‘Romans in Britain’ location, this time at Glannoventa, Ravenglass Roman Baths and also Muncaster Castle a short distance away. On leaving Blackpool, I initially found the roads leading north to be busy with work traffic, but, once leaving the immediate area found traffic all the way to the motorway at J33 light and this was also to be the case on the M6. Soon leaving the M6 at J36 and continuing on the monotonous road to Ravenglass. The WX was great though with blue skies and sunny periods for most of the journey and more importantly, no rain! On arrival at Ravenglass, later than I had anticipated, I headed for the main car park behind the Ratty Arms and took the option of paying £2.80 for 4 hours at the Pay & Display rather than the £1.50 for 2 hours. Rucksack on and headed to the top right of the car park while gaining the path leading onto the bridge and the Ravenglass signal box which would taken me over the main railway lines and onto the path heading for the lane accommodating the Roman Baths. After the bridge you pass the childrens play area on the left and a football grassed area on your right. At the end of the path turn right onto the lane as signposted for the Roman Baths and continue up the lane passing the Ravenglass Caravan & Camping Club main entrance before continuing up the lane signed ‘Private Road’. A further few hundred meters will bring you to the Roman Baths on your left. On arrival I set-up by the fence-line next to a large field the Yaesu FT-857 and 20/40M linked dipole in the inverted ‘V’ supported by a fishing pole. I intended to work 40M SSB and on tuning around found the band to be extremely quiet, however, managed to work the following stations: G4TSQ/M G1OCN/M G7AFM G4CQR MM3PDM GW6JNE G1PIE G0ABY G4JZF G4WYL/M G4WAB G7WAB/A Equipment Used: Yaesu FT-857 Sotabeams 20/40M linked Dipole in inverted ‘V’ 8M Fishing Pole 12V 12AHr battery 40W Output Photos of the activation can be found at: www.cqportable.webs.comwww.cashota.co.ukCASHOTA Northwest England Group Only 12 stations worked and due to propagation and time constraints I decided to move onto my second activation of the day being Muncaster Castle G-456. Thanks to all stations worked. 73's Ian 2E0EDX
