Moving on from Castle Stede I then drove the approximate 2 miles to the village of Arkholme and my next activation of Chapel Hill. on arrival in the village and passing the village hall I took the left turn at the crossroads and headed for the church of St John the Baptist. A narrow road was encountered and towards the end of this road it forks, right and signposted 'River View', but, taking the left turn takes you to the church entrance which has parking for two cars. The photo below shows me 2E0EDX parked up with C4XTR in front of the church gates.
Kit on and through the church gates walking to the right of the church to the church entrance. Continuing straight on to the end of the church you are immediately confronted with a conical mound and the earthwork of the motte and bailey fortress.
Climbed the mound and this time set up the 2m 3el SOTA beam mounted on a WASP Special and Leki walking pole and using the Yaesu VX-170 and a 25w Puma 2m amplifier. QRV at 1215 hours working Tony G7OEM on the Fylde Coast in St Annes and one of the realHFmobile group, Ian G6OVR/P, John M6XNO/P and Chris M0RSF/P on SOTA summit Sharp Haw NP-029 and last but not least for the qualifier Richard G1JTD/P on a WOTA summit LDW-117.
Again another picturesque location but difficult to get the contacts in this low lying valley surrounded by the north Peninnes. In my opinion this location does lend itself to an HF activation but care must be taken as the graveyard in extremely close to the motte and church.
Photos of the activation have been placed on the 'Gallery' section of the CASHOTA website.
