After leaving the activation of Chapel Hill, Arkholme, I set off on the 3 mile drive towards the village of Whittington to activate Whittington Motte. On arrival in the village I soon found the Church of St Michael the Archangel on the narrow Church Street on the road to Hutton Roof Crag (SOTA summit location) and of which has little parking on it. I could not resist taking a photo of the lovely mosaic of St Michael the Archangel found on the pavement before climbing the stairs to the church gates. On entering the churchyard I made my way round to the rear and on finding the motte set-up on the top again next to a large bushy tree utilising the 2m 3el SOTA beam, Yaesu VX-170 and 2m FM Puma amplifier but after calling CQ for approximately 1/2 hour made no contacts so abandoned the activation. This is a lovely picturesque location on a hill and a large field can be found below at the rear of the church which lends itself to an HF activation using a wire dipole. therefore I will be back soon for an HF activation to conqueror this motte. Photographs of Whittington Motte can be found in the 'Gallery' section of the CASHOTA website. 73's Ian 2E0EDX www.cqportable.webs.com
