Up at 0700 hrs and after breakfast and charging flasks etc we were soon in the car and heading north out of Thornton Cleveleys. Exterior temperature was showing 3 degrees and we had a medium drizzle with very dark skies, but hey! Ho! Heavy snow was forecast over the Pennines for later in the day so I estimated that we could successfully activate both locations before the snow fall if it came.
Soon turning off the M6 and heading to Caton on our way to the first activation at Whittington Motte G-503. Soon passing Hornby, Gressington and Arkholme and then our intended location of Whittington and the Motte at the church of St Micheal the Archangel. However, little did I realise that their was little or no parking in the village and all were starting to arrive for church......... Not a good start and not wishing to hang about decided that perhaps time was not on our side today and we would move on to Castle Hill Burton in Lonsdale. On arrival we had the same story with no parking due to all visiting the Chapel for morning service............. Arrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhh!
Right. Lets head back to Hornby and try Hornby Castle. I must apologise to Chris MODOL who worked hard giving me a block of G-500 to G-510 reference which are taken up but not including one for Hornby Castle, therefore, Chris I need G-511. Thanks.
On arrival at Hornby we kept to the south side of the River Lune and the main bridge crossing the river and found a car park just at the bridge entrance. This car park is big enough for twenty cars and the only charge to park is via an 'honesty box' on the wall by the entrance. Parked up right in the corner by the kids play park and set-up the Prowhip 160m – 6m vertical tying the antenna to an angle iron picket next to the fencing.
Set-up the Yaesu FT-817 on the rear parcel shelf of the car and worked 40M SSB working John GB4 R (RADAR), was'nt you Chris,, Charlie GM100RSGB, Andy GOAYZ in Gosport, Paul M6PCI in Haverhill, Marko DG5BKM in Hamburg, Kevin G0TPZ nr Birmingham, Callum M0MCX in Solihull, Terry GW0AVW in Caerphilly, Rob GW0WLQ nr Cardiff and Enda EI13CLAN in Gallway.
With ten contacts in the log and the weather coming in, it was time to pack up and head home.
Lessons learnt: Sunday mornings are out due to the dreaded contest, Dutch in the main today, those attending church and taking up all the parking spaces and I now have both Whittington Motte and Castle Hill to attempt yet again.
Photographs of activation have been placed in the various photo galleries..............
