Dumbarton Castle GM-235
Wednesday, the 8th May saw us heading north from Wemyss Bay to the Erskine Bridge on the western side of Glasgow to cross over the River Clyde while heading for Dumbarton Castle for a recce in heavy rain, this WX was to be the story of the fortnight's holiday up north although managing two decent activating days.
Contacted both John M0JFE & Brian M0OYG by text of the CASHOTA Northwest England Group to alert me on the group website of my activation intentions for Friday's activations. Thanks to both stations.
Then came the morning of Friday, 10th May and I again headed for Dumbarton Castle to attempt my first Scottish CASHOTA activation, leaving Wemyss Bay at approximately 0645 hrs and arriving this time on a nice sunny morning. I had left the family slumbering while I went solo.
Set-up the equipment at the back of C4 XTR approximately 100M from Dumbarton Football Ground and 20M from the main entrance to the castle with a backdrop onto the River Clyde. Parking here for several cars or you could park on the road leading to the castle prior to arrival at the football ground, perhaps avoiding a Saturday afternoon's activation.
Once set-up, called CQ 40M and worked:
0808 7.118 F/M0IBA Garry in North Brittany with 58/59 reports
0830 7.136 G4VSJ Len in Leicester with 58/59 reports
0835 7139 PA/OR9W Kurt on EU-038 Ameland with 58/59 reports
0842 7.136 G8ODE Mario in Workingham with 59/59 each way reports
0844 7.136 M3MKM Dave in Borehamwood with 58/58 each way reports
0850 7.136 MI3RBM Bobby in Craigavon N.I with 58/55 reports
0900 7.136 2E0ZVR Barry in Pershore with 57/59 reports
0905 7.136 GW4UEP Ken in Newport with 58/59 reports
Then changed to 20M:
0919 14.283 OE5AUL/P Peter in Austrian SOTA Summit OOE-277 with 57/57 each way reports
0921 14.215 DR20CFT Rudi in Traunstein Special Events Station with 59/59 each way reports
0938 14.192 F5BTH Alain in France with 53/58 reports and 20M conditions dropping off.
Equipment used:
Yaesu FT-857
LDG Z100 ATU
20/40M Vertical ProWhip Antenna with balun & counterpoise
50w
With Dumbarton Castle qualified with eleven contacts I then drove to Newark Castle on the banks of the River Clyde for the next activation.
Thanks to all stations worked.
All photos of this activation can be viewed in the Scottish section in the 'Gallery' on the main CASHOTA website.
