While heading north to the area of Penrith and attempting to activate Dacre Castle G-522 on Tuesday, 27th August 2013, I will if time allows continue to Brougham Castle G-523 and attempt to also activate this castle also. Brougham Castle is a medieval building about 2 miles (3.2 km) south-east of Penrith. The castle was founded in the early 13th century. The site, near the confluence of the rivers Eamont and Lowther, had been chosen by the Romans for a roman fort named Brocavum . Today the castle is a scheduled monument and open to the public. In its earliest form, the castle consisted of a stone Keep, with an enclosure protected by an earthen bank and a wooden palasade. When the castle was built, Robert de Vieuxpont was one of only a few lords loyal to the king in the region. The Vieuxponts were a powerful land-owning family in north west England and also owned the castles of Appleby and Brough. In 1264 Robert de Vieuxpont's grandson, also named Robert, was declared a traitor and his property was confiscated by Henry III. Brougham Castle and the other estates were eventually returned to the Vieuxpont family, and stayed in their possession until 1269 when the estates passed to the Clifford family through marriage. Hopefully I will be QRV at approximately 1300 hrs +/- 1/2 hr and will try both 40M & 20MM SSB. Loc: IO84PP WAB: NY52 Would hope to work CASHOTA members. 73's

Re: Brougham Castle G-523 Activation 27/08/13 After successfully activating Dacre Castle G-522 it was back onto the A66 and head back towards the M6 and Penrith. Not long before I came off the dual carriageway and drove to the River Eamont before crossing the bridge and parking up at the walled junction just before the castle entrance. Brougham Castle is an English Heritage site and there is a charge on entry at the reception and cafe on the castle grounds. Parking for approximately ten cars can be had alongside the walled area at the junction but very poor for any dipole, for HF a vertical is the antenna of choice. Initially set-up on 40M SSB and was straight into Pat EI5IX in Westport County Mayo and then: Callsigns worked: EI5IX Pat 56 57 7.183 GX1RCD Terry 58 58 7.164 Dartmoor F4GZJ Christian 59+ 59 14.220 Toulouse GM4NFI Dave 57 55 7.160 EI2KD Rodney 53 55 7.160 GM0FGI Dave 56 53 7.160 DL7UCW Dok 55 51 7.160 EI7EZ Brendan 58 59 7.180 Buncarra MM0UDI Robby 55 56 7.189 Aberdeen MM3PDM/P Peter 57 57 7.189 Aberdeen Equipment used: Yaesu FT-857 Prowhip 20/40m vertical 12V 80AHr Battery Car ramp plate 50W Conditions were very poor today on 40M in a southerly direction with most contacts being north of the border in fact the slightly longer skip up to the Orkneys etc was the order of the day thanks in the main to the members of the WAB net and others. All photos of the activation are shown in the 'Photo Gallery' on the main CASHOTA website plus the photo section of this Forum and the CQportable website. Thanks also to Chris M0DOL for allocating the batch of castle references. A great day's activating with two more castles completed, picturesque scenery, great WX and I'm now in the planning stage for further CASHOTA activations in the coming weeks ahead. 73's
