After hopefully a sucessful activation of Clifton Hall Pele Tower G-527 on Wednesday, 25th September 2013, I hope to drive back south on the M6 and turn off the motorway in order to activate my second Pele Tower being Arnside Pele Tower G-528. Situated about a mile and a half outside of Arnside, and to the South East of Arnside Knott, Arnside tower is a spectacular and almost unique example of a Cumbrian Pele Tower. The oldest building in the parish, the tower was built in the late 14 or early 15th century, and was a free standing tower (most pele towers had outbuildings or were attached to a house or hall of some sort). The tower would originally have been four and five storeys tall, however due to systematic dismantling and weathering and age, it is now both roofless and floorless. The tower was severely burned in 1602, probably through a domestic fire rather than as the result of an attack, but was repaired and then occupied. Between 1684 and 1690, the dismantling occurred, with building materials being removed to Beetham and Knowsley. Again I hope to be QRV on 40m SSB but at approximately 1400 hrs and will be on or close to the WAB net frequency of 7.160. I will also have 20m and 2m FM available and will be monitoring S20 for those stations more local and wishing to work me or those wishing a contact as I travel south while /M. After successfully activating Clifton Hall Pele Tower G-527, packing the car up, it was back onto the M6 and soon heading southbound towards Arnside and Silverdale and soon turning off at J36 where the TomTom GPS system took me through the village of Milnthorpe before heading towards Arnside fronting the estuary and then over the top while passing the road to Arnside Knott a SOTA summit previously activated on a number of occasions and eventually the road leading to Arnside Pele Tower G-528. On arrival, quickly noticed that at the entrance to the lane leading to the Tower a sign stating 'no parking' on the grass verge and certainly did not want to park near the farm, so turned round and parked in a lay-by a 100M back at the side of the road with a lovely landscaped view of the Tower approximately 500M from the road which suited my static mobile set-up. However, if you wanted to park at this location and walk to the Tower, various wire dipoles etc could be employed /P. Again while the XYL took the puppy for a walk I set-up the FT-857 and Prowhip 20/40M antenna and while doing so noticed that I had lost two sections of the 2/70 Super Gainer Dual band mobile antenna somewhere between Penrith and Arnside, £40 down the drain! Quick brew and worked straight into 7.160 in order to work the WAB net and worked the following stations; M0KAP/M 53 57 7.160 Paul TL53 G8CBU 57 57 7.160 Ray TL02 GM0FGI 56 59 7.160 Tom Isle of Bute DL7UCW 55 58 Bern G4JZF 57 58 7.160 Graham SJ90 EI2KD 57 59 7.160 Rodney GW7BGA/M 33 57 7.160 Geoff SJ21 MM3PDM/M 55 56 7.160 NJ80 GW7BGA/M 53 55 7.160 Geoff SJ22 M0JFE 59+ 59+ 7.160 John SD34 TM63ISS 59 59+ 14.263 Jean on 20M G-Whip Equipment used: YAESU FT-857 ProWhip 20/40M Vertical 20M G-Whip 12V 80AHr Battery 50W Many thanks to all stations worked. Really great to work John M0JFE a member of the CASHOTA Northwest England Group and Mark G1PIE in Preston. Great to complete my second activation of the day and also my second Pele Tower.
