WX dependant, I hope this Friday, 23rd May 2014 to head to Cumbria and activate my first roman fort. I have chosen the roman fort at Waterhead, Ambleside. The Roman Fort of GALAVA, built as one of a series of fortified structures to protect the vital trade routes through Cumbria, was built around AD79, and made use of a strategic position, protected on two sides by water. During the Roman army’s conquest of Northern Britain towards the end of the first Century, a small timber fort was built here to house a garrison of 200 men. It was soon abandoned, but the site was redeveloped early in the 2nd Century AD. The fort was demolished and a second one built in stone on an artificial platform which is still just visible. It housed a cohort of 500 infantrymen. The intention will be to activate the fort on 40M SSB and I would hope to be QRV at approximately 1000 hrs +/- 1/2 hour Castle Ref: G534 WAB: SD30 Loc: IO84MK Hope to work members of the group. 73's Ian 2E0EDX CASHOTA Northwest England Group

With the imminent ‘Romans in Britain’ Award due for release by the CASHOTA management, I decided to start my roman activations this weekend, although I have activated roman sites previously at Brough and Brougham Castles, I have only registered the castles as activated. On Friday, 27th June 2014, I was up early, car packed and at 0730 hrs I found myself heading NNE out of Blackpool towards J33 of the M6. Motorway was relatively quiet this morning and I made good time to J36 where I left the motorway towards Lake Windermere and the village of Ambleside. Total distance 58.4 miles. On arrival at Ambleside, I headed towards Borrans Park and Waterhead at the head of Lake Windermere and parked up at the Ambleside Rugby Club just before the left turning to Skelwith Bridge. This is a decent sized car park which allows you to park and payment is by way of an ‘Honesty Box’ located on the grassed area. The signage advocates a £2 charge for 2 hrs or & £4 for the day. On leaving the car park turn right on the main road and follow the road back towards Ambleside for approximately 300/400m before entering Borrans Park and through the gate into Galava Roman Fort. On arrival at the fort I set-up the initially the half-wave End Fed 40m antenna in the inverted ‘V’ supported by the 4.1m fishing pole and using the Yaesu FT-817 with 5w output in line with the Sotabeams Mountain top tuner was QRV at 0945 hrs. However, propagation was not great and my 5w was not doing the business, therefore, I packed up and headed back to the car to collect the second rucksack containing the Yaesu FT-857 and Sotabeams 20/40m linked dipole. This set-up proved effective in qualifying the fort. I worked the following stations on 40m: G7BGA G0FEX G0ABY G0RYM G3XKT G0BFJ G1PIE G4SQA MM3PDM/P G7AFM G4CQR DL7UCW MM3KNI GI0IF2Q Equipment used: FT-857 Sotabeams 20/40m Linked Dipole 12V 12AHr Battery 40W Output Fishing Pole All in all a very pleasant activation in very scenic surroundings. Photographs of the activation can be found on the following websites: www.cqportable.webs.comwww.cashota.co.ukCASHOTA Northwest England Group Thanks to all stations worked. With ten contacts reached and the fort qualified it was now time to move onto the second location and fort of the day at Mediobogdum, Hardknott Pass Roman Fort G452. 73's Ian 2E0EDX
