WX dependant, I hope this Bank Holiday Monday, 26th May 2014 to head again to Cumbria and activate my second roman fort. I have chosen the roman fort at Hardknott Pass on the Eskdale valley side of the Pass. The Roman Fort, one of the loneliest outposts of the Roman Empire, built between AD120 and AD138 is on a spectacular site overlooking the pass which forms part of the Roman road from Ravenglass to Ambleside and Brougham at Penrith. The walls surrounded granaries, barracks, and a commandant’s house. The baths, with a sequence of three rooms can be seen outside the main walls. An area of flattened ground is believed to be a parade area. The intention will be to activate the fort on 40M SSB and I would hope to be QRV at approximately 1000 hrs +/- 1/2 hour Castle Ref: G535 WAB: NY20 Loc: IO84JJ Hope to work members of the group. 73's Ian 2E0EDX CASHOTA Northwest England Group

I have received a new CASHOTA Reference Number for this Roman Fort which is G452.
I will now be activating this location, WX dependant, on Friday, 27th June 2014 to save on fuel costs after activating Galava Roman Fort and would hope to be QRV at 1300 Hrs (L) +/- 1/2 hour.
I will be using 20/40M SSB and would hope to work forum members.

Again with the imminent ‘Romans in Britain’ Award due for release by the CASHOTA management and after completing the activation of Galava, Ambleside Roman Fort earlier that morning, I continued with the activation of Mediobogdum, Hardknott Pass Roman Fort. Distance from Galava to Mediobogdum was 11.4 miles. After negotiating Wrynose Pass and the steep traversing climb to the top of Hardknott Pass, I headed downhill to the car park just above the roman fort. There are two car parks here which can accommodate approximately a dozen cars and its free parking. Rucksack on and soon onto the track heading on a slight incline up to the fort main entrance, while passing the roman bath house on the way up. On arrival at the fort and with the previous experience that morning at Galava I set-up the 20/40m linked Dipole antenna in the inverted ‘V’ supported by the 8m fishing pole and using the Yaesu FT-857 with 40w output and was QRV at 1315 hrs. I worked the following stations: 2E0WPZ G0GWK G0DYM G4UDY/P G6LKB G0GWY/M G0FEX G4CQR G4JZF G0ABY G7AFM G4NFY Equipment used: FT-857 20/40m Sotabeams Linked Dipole 40w Output 12V 12 AHr battery Fishing Pole All in all, a very pleasant activation, in scenic surroundings with fantastic views from the fort into the Eskdale valley and onwards to the Irish Sea. Photographs of the activation can be found on the following websites: www.cqportable.webs.comwww.cashota.co.ukCASHOTA Northwest England Group Unfortunately. I did'nt stay to long at this location due to very black clouds appearing over the top of Hardknott Pass and therefore once qualified I packed up and headed back to the car. Thanks to all stations worked. 73's Ian 2E0EDX
