After hopefully a successful activation of Ravenglass Roman Fort & Baths I will continue to Muncaster Castle to activate it. Dominating the River Esk, Muncaster has been of strategic importance since Roman times, and has been home to the Penningtons since 1208. The pele tower stands on Roman foundations and was extended through the ages into the Castle of today. In 1862 the fashionable architect Anthony Salvin was engaged by the fourth Lord Muncaster to rebuild the house. Salvin took the courtyard, built by the first Lord Muncaster, and converted it into the present drawing room. The pele tower at the SW end was matched by Salvin with the NW tower. He did a good job, with towers, battlements and mullioned and transomed windows. In 1208 the land was granted to the Pennington family, and it is still their home, probably only due to the magical ‘Luck of Muncaster’, a glass drinking bowl belonging to Henry VI. He gave it to the family in 1464 declaring that as long as it remained intact, Penningtons would live and thrive at Muncaster. I would hope to be QRV at 1300 hrs +/- 1/2 hour and would hope to work forum members. Cashota Ref: G-456 WAB: SD19 Loc: IO84HI 73's Ian 2E0EDX

After a successful activation of Ravenglass Roman Baths it was back to the car and onwards on the 2 ¼ miles to Muncaster Castle where on arrival I parked on the free car park immediately across the road from the castle entrance. This is a large car park and at the time of my activation it was only approximately a ¼ full. I again set-up the 20/40M linked dipole in the inverted ‘V’ along the fence-line at the top of the car park, but this time employed the Yaesu FT-900AT on the rear parcel shelf of the car. Again though conditions were very poor on both 20 and 40M but managed to qualify the castle on 40M with ten contacts and most stations being in G.
