In Lancashire, the main invasion threat was from a German occupation of Ireland. The flat sandy beaches of Lancashire were viewed as ideal landing grounds. The Leeds Liverpool canal was fortified because of the proximity to the coast some seven miles to the west and defence positions were sited along its east banks. This was known as the Leeds Liverpool canal Stop Line. Further defences were built at crossing points on other waterways throughout west Lancashire My first activation of a World War 11 anti invasion pillbox will be in my home town of Blackpool at Salisbury Woodland Park on the entrance road to Blackpool Zoo and next to the golf course. This pillbox is a Type 22 and was constructed in 1940 as a lookout post to protect the Blackpool Municipal airport located at what is now the zoo. The airport was commandeered by the RAF in 1939. As can be seen by the plaque below this pillbox is part of the Blackpool Civic Trust Heritage Trail. Type 22 Pillbox at Blackpool
This pillbox door has been sealed so viewing is through the windows. A statue of a Homeguard soldier has been placed on top recently as also the blue information plaque. The Zoo is on the site of the original municipal airport before it was moved to Squires Gate. The old hangers are still used by the Zoo as is the original tower and passenger terminal which is now the Elephant house. During the war it was used for aircraft storage and the assembly of Wellingtons. CASHOTA Ref:G457

Loc: IO83LTI would hope to activate this pillbox on an evening next week on VHF possible HF SSB also. Details to follow. 73's Ian 2E0EDX

Carried out a recce of this location this afternoon and took a few photos which can be viewed in the main CASHOTA photo 'Gallery' or on the CQportable website.
Parking can be undertaken on parking bays on the main road leading upto Blackpool Zoo entrance and car park at a distance of approx 100M from the pillbox.
Unfortunately, their is no room for a wire dipole in the woodland, but, if you ventured onto the perimeter of the golf coarse immediately behind the pillbox their is the opportunity to perhaps put one up. I will probably activate this site on VHF from the car in the bays provided of which you can stay for upto 2 hours. Alternatively you could make the activation into a longer stay with a trip to the zoo if visiting Blackpool on holiday etc, therefore, parking in the zoo car park approximately 150m away.

I now intend to activate the Blackpool Municipal Airport WW11 Type 22 Pillbox G-457 tomorrow evening, Tuesday, 8th July 2014 while /M on 2M FM. I will be QRV at approximately 1930 hrs calling on S20 and will then QSY to a clear frequency. Unfortunately on this occassion it will be mainly locals and the Fleetwood Radio Enthusiasts Group who I will be working, however, will possibly activate this location at a later date on the HF bands. This activation once qualified will be my 25th CASHOTA activation and I look forward to gaining the 25 activations Award 73's Ian 2E0EDX
